This National Park, located at the most Southern point of Australia is so stunningly beautiful that it deserves a page all of its own.

Landscape views don't come any better than this :)

Wilsons Promontary (Prom for short) has a diversity of landscape offering everything from huge mountains, open bush & lush green grass to rivers flowing into the ocean next to stunning 'squeaky' powder sand beaches. The photos on here are mainly taken on my iPhone & cant possibly do it justice but I hope you get an idea of how spectacular this place is. When I get home I will be processing the images off my Canon camera & I can't wait to see them full size on my lovely Mac screen!

After finding this place on the internet whilst searching for campsites near to the Melbourne area, I was disappointed to be told online that the whole park was fully booked. I thought this was odd as there are over 450 campsites dotted around the area & it was no yet holiday season, so I decided to give them a call instead. Happily the website must have had a glitch, as the lady on the phone booked me in straight away. At nearly 60 dollars (approx £35) per night without hook up, it wasn't cheap but having seen some of the images on the internet I knew it would be worth every penny so we were on our way!

After 9 hours & 400 miles of driving (including our short stop offs) we arrived at the entrance to the park, picked up a map from outside the kiosk & because it was out of hours & therefore unmanned, we drove straight in.

The camp we are staying at is called Tidal River & the sign near the entrance said 30km. We were in no rush so tootled along slowly looking for any animals. About 10km in we saw a sign for Vereker Outlook Walk so decided to go and check this out first; it sounded lovely plus we both really needed to stretch our legs after sitting down for so long!

When we arrived at the parking area there were 2 other empty vehicles already parked, plus another car that had also turned on to the dirt road behind us; this one was pulled up next to the info. stand and one of the 2 women was stood outside the car. The map said the walk would be around 3km so I grabbed my phone, camera & 2 extra lenses & we locked up & set off. I looked back and both women were sat back in the car as it pulled up next to our camper.

The first thing we spotted were these huge ants (about 1cm long)!

After walking for about 1 mile we started discussing the slightly odd behaviour of the 2 women back at the car park. They had arrived before us, had hung about until we'd gone & then parked their car right next to ours... we then concluded that they could be robbing the van as we walked on oblivious so on with a sense of slight panic we turned round and walked (very fast) back to the van. It's funny how you don't realise how far you've gone until you're in a hurry to get back! Long story short, we hadn't been robbed & I had to apologise under my breath to the poor women whom we had branded common thieves. It might sound paranoid but the fact is that public car parks for walkers are ideal places for opportunists to strike & seeing as we were in a camper van & obviously on holiday, chances are that there would be a lot of things worth stealing in there. We made a promise that next time we want to go walking somewhere, be it remote or popular & however short, however short, we will take everything of worth with us or not go at all. Although we are insured, the inconvenience of replacing passports, cards, electronic items & other important things would definitely have had a negative effect on our trip so lesson learned & filled with a massive sense of relief we carried on towards our campsite, feeling very grateful & just a bit happy!

Look who we saw!

All day we've been seeing signs like these & although we've already come across a number of wallabies & kangaroos, we haven't yet seen a wombat! I love these gorgeous animals & was desperate to see one in the wild.

And then...

..there he was, munching away on the side of the road! Unfortunately the encounter was brief, just had chance to take this through the window & then he was gone, but we felt so lucky to have seen him (or her!) If we could see a wild koala next, our holiday will be complete :)

It's getting late now & we want an early start so I'll leave you with a few more scenery pics & the potential promise of some nature cam results as I saw my second wombat a couple of hours ago! It was dark but he was lit up by a park light so I have set the cam up in that area & am crossing everything for a positive result in the morning :)

As you drive on deeper into the park the scenery just keeps getting better and better
